Posted on Nov 02, 2009 under breast cancer |

i’m doing a school paper and i need to interview a doctor who specializes in breast cancer.
like the main topics i need to ask about are mastectomy and lumpectomy.

like
"what procedure do you think works better, lumpectomy or mastectomy?"
questions like that….

please and thank you!

  1. Tarkarri Says:

What teacher sets kids assignments like these and expects oncologists to make time to be interviewed?

Rather than asking which works better, which assumes one is always better than the other, ask things like how do you choose if you should to do a lumpectomy or mastectomy? Which allows to say when each is preferred option and why.

  2. Dave Says:

If he or she works at a clinic:

    1. Who else besides yourself determines your patients best options, is there a panel of doctors that review each breast cancer case?

    2. Do you recommend a surgeon that specializes in breast cancer surgeries and do you think it makes a difference?

    3. If a patient has a large tumor 4.5 + cm would or do you consider shrinking the tumor using chemotherapy?

    4. If a patient does not show cancer in the other breast but there is a history of family members with cancer in the family would getting a mastectomy on the other breast be a precaution?

    5. What role does "margins" play in determining whether you choose a lumpectomy or mastectomy?

Here are five questions that I have asked about my wife’s mastectomy. Margins were the determining factor in our decision because there were no clear ones.

After the surgery I would ask about breast reconstruction and when to have it done. Example Christine Applegate had a reconstruction done at the time of her mastectomy.
