Leukemia Question again? can RN or some kind of Doctor answer please?
Posted on May 04, 2009 under Leukemia |My 24 year old Brother has Acute Myelo Monoblastic Leukemia, he did first round of Chemo it took 8 days and Doctor was happy with the Result, White blood cells were coming down to 0.2 but after few days he said Test was not good at 0.3 Leukocytes cancerous cells were already 3% basically he told us that Chemo did not work and he does not think other one will and even bone marrow transplant will not, he is not saying it straight but making us to believe so. meanwhile my Brother is suffering with agonizing terrible Stomach pains they are giving him Morphine injections because nothing helps I sat next to him holding his hand last night and he was screaming and crying, they did several sonograms and everything in stomach looks ok, in the end they said it is because he has Low leukocytes (1000) and when its back to normal he will be ok. My Question is is it possible that Doctor says after 1 st round of Chemo that nothing will help Patient? and second has any one heard of or experience this kind of terrible stomach pain with leukemia? what do we do now? we still want to send him away to germany where there is Leukemia Center and try for Bone transplant. Sorry for asking some many times and so many Questions but In live in Post Soviet union country and I am not happy with Doctors here…
His Chemo has ended last week he is still in hospital getting blood transfusions, Trombocytes and soe antibiotics…

In AML, the first round of Chemotherapy is called Induction. These kind of Chemo causes several side effects as apart from cancerous cells, normal cells of body are affected severely. This may explain the pains and sufferings of your brother.
As also, in AML or other leukemias, there could be a case of Non Responding Leukemia. In such cases, further Chemo or other treatment may result into more pains and sufferings to the patient.
Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) is ideally advised in the condition called Complete Remission. In cases of Non Responding Leukemia also, BMT is done in countries like India, US and Europe. However, chances of success are rare.
All the best and good wishes for your brother to fight and recover.

I'm not a doctor, nor a RN but I am a two time AML leukiema survivor. What they are going to do is they are going to try again with more chemo. If that doesn't work they may whip out the super stuff and combine that with radiation. If that doesn't work then go for a stem cell transplant and the University of Minnisota in the USA. I got my transplant there and I am now 3 years out of remission and I am completely healthy. What I'm not going to tell you is that this will be easy. It changes people. Me as the patient I find it hard to sympathize with people who a complaining about how bad they feel or the whole "How could it get any worse?" It can. It's got to get worse before it gets better. If you do come over here to the US then go to Minninsota. If your brother is younger than 18 here the address of the Ronald McDonald house in Minneapolis MN.
818 Fulton Street SE
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55414
For Lodging Information
Call 612.805.3467 or email lodging@rmhc-um.org
They'll take care of everything housing wise. Food, clothes, money, all that stuff is taken care of. If he's over 18 there is another house type thing for adults also. Really all you got to do is show up and be treated. Money is taken care of along with the necessities so you and your brother can focus on getting better. I can't recall the adult places name but call the Ronald McDonald house and ask them for the name. They'll give it to you. Ask for pegasus. She'll take care of the reservations.

Hi ! I have being following your questions for a while and I read first " we are happy with the results " and few days later" he told us that Chemo did not work". I am not surprise because I see this and heard this type of things everyday around me and in several groups of cancer survivors. I am not an RN or a MD but a cancer survivor helping others cancer survivors. You have to understand that no MD is anxious to answer your questions at this point. 75 % of MD and oncologists will NEVER do a chemo on themselves as they know too well the product. Have you ever seen a spill of chemo on an arm ?Just to handle this toxic product nurse have to wear two pairs of special gloves !
Nevertheless as soon your brother will do better they will probably do another round on chemo on him or ask him if he want to enroll in a new " trial ". You have some important choices to make now; or you continue with orthodox medicine or you go alternative but you need to know this fact first: according to 2 major meta analysis one from Germany and one from Australia the success rate of chemo is 2% to 3 %. Also, you have to understand how cancer statistics are prepared and altered. I wish I could be proved wrong.. and I am still waiting…
I will give you at the end of this post few links that will help you to make a choice. It is not to late.. I just saw a patient beating his last stage cancer in less than two weeks, so don't give up.. I will had his Blog address too. You have a lot of cures out there,a lot of help available and cancer survivor willing to help out there. For the pain you have a lot of non-toxic helpers available like
