cervical cancer question–can you get it geneticaly?
Posted on Jan 31, 2009 under breast cancer |Someone has told me that they have cervical cancer and Im a little confused about it. I read that its caused by hpv and other health issues. but my friend says she got it genetically. is that possible??

Cancer is when your body's cells regenerate, and some of them get out of control, multiplying more than they're supposed to. This can be caused from anything however instances where cell regeneration is used more readily [i.e. recovering from sunburn] you increase your chances of having this "rogue cells" multiply. That being said, HPV causes warts, or, uncontrolled growths. Warts are usually not cancerous in the aspect that the keep multiplying, but they end up in an unsightly lump in places. (Although they're still technically cancerous) It is when these growths get out of control and continue multiplying (creating a tumor).
Genetics can play a role, as your genes may be more likely to "miss" the message of how many cells are need to regenerate. So it's not a "genetic" disease, per se, it is just the fact that faulty genes (that miss the message that says "stop multiplying!) are sometimes more likely to occur.
So any instances where cell regeneration is increased, it also increases your chances of cancer.
