Are these symptoms of breast cancer? I'm only fourteen!?

Posted on Dec 28, 2008 under breast cancer |

So, I'm turning 15 in March, and I think I might be too young for breast cancer, but I don't know. Before I hopped into the shower, I suddenly realized that my right breast is really swollen on the bottom and near the part near the armpit. It really hurts if I push on one spot or if I just cross my arms.

I don't know, it really hurts. I just got it tonight. Any suggestions of what it is?

Maybe you're going to start your period soon.

    Maybe your boob is growning.

    Perform a self brest check.

It would be HIGHLY unlikely to have breast cancer at your age. It is likely just swollen and sore from your breasts developing. Also you have lymph nodes under your arms that can become swollen. Also breasts swell and become sore with hormonal changes near menstrual cycles and since you are fourteen you are nothing but a big bunch of crazy hormones. You could always ask your mom and/or doctor about it if you continue to be concerned

I doubt that its cancer. You probably just hit it on something and now its swollen. If it doesn't go down in a few days then see a doctor.

Don't worry you don't have breast cancer I believe you have to be towards the age of thirty to get it but I am not sure it is quite that old.

First - let me give you the bad news - you are not too young to develop breast cancer.

Now - from what little you said, it sounds more like perhaps a swollen / clogged lymph node (gland) than a cancer - BUT, that still needs to be looked at.

Do not deny yourself out of help - I have a friend who had a hard lump in her breast - she said there is no way it could be cancer… a year later, it was still growng, and she brought it up to her doctor then .. a YEAR later … and it was breast cancer - they did chemo, then removed both breasts.

The chances of breast cancer at your age are very, very close to zero.

The biggest risk factor for breast cancer is ageing - 80% of those diagnosed with it are over 50, only around 5% are under 40 and it's almost unheard of in under 25s.

The American Cancer Society and other cancer organisations recommend that women begin breast self-examination at the age of 20.

Most breast lumps, even in women over 50, aren't cancerous. Most cancerous breast lumps don't hurt - most people who are diagnosed with breast cancer have felt no pain.

At your age your breasts are still growing and developing, and what you describe is almost certainly hormonal.

Talk to your mother about this; if you feel you can't do that, talk to your school nurse if you still have the pain and swelling when you return to school. She will be used to girls with such worries and will take you seriously, and should be able to reassure you

When I was in high school this type of thing happened to my best friend. It turned out she had a cyst in her breast, which caused it to go red and become really painful. She had to go to the doctors and have it burst/drained.

I don't think it's cancer becuase it has come up so quickly.

But if it hurts, go to the doctor - you don't have to be in pain.
